1962 - Benny Goodman led the first American jazz band to play in the Soviet Union.

1964 - The Beatles went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Love Me Do', the group's fourth US No.1 in five months. 1968 - The Beatles began recording the "White Album."

1987 - Adam Horowitz of The Beastie Boys arrested in Liverpool after hitting a girl fan during a riot at a local theatre after the group’s appearance.
1990 - Australian rockers Midnight Oil make headlines when they stage a protest concert outside of the Exxon building in New York City in response to the Exxon Valdez oil spill that devastated Prince William Sound in Alaska the year before. 2017 - Olivia Newton-John postpones her US and Canadian tour to fight a recurrence of breast cancer, which has spread to her back. The 68-year-old singer had been in remission since 1992.

2019 - Singer-songwriter, guitarist, actor Leon Redbone died age 69. Redbone rose to fame in the '70s folk scene when Bob Dylan sought him out at a Canadian music festival.
