1917 - Dean Martin is born Dino Paul Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio. As Martin's solo career grew, he and Frank Sinatra became friends. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Martin and Sinatra, along with friends Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford, and Sammy Davis, Jr. formed the Rat Pack. He retired from public life in early 1995 and died of acute respiratory failure resulting from emphysema at his Beverly Hills home on Christmas Day, 1995, at the age of 78, twenty-nine years to the day, and almost to the minute, after his mother died. 2012 - Bob Welch, Fleetwood Mac's guitarist from 1971–1974, dies of suicide at age 66. Welch left Fleetwood Mac in 1974; his replacement, Lindsey Buckingham, brought his girlfriend Stevie Nicks into the band, establishing their most successful lineup.
