1936 - George "Buddy" Guy born in Lettsworth, Louisiana. American blues guitarist and singer who starts his career in the '60s as the house guitarist for Chess Records. Critically acclaimed, he is a pioneer of the Chicago blues sound.
1941 - Canadian American singer, songwriter and actor Paul Anka born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He had the 1957 πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί, UK & US No.1 single 'Diana' which sold over 9 million copies world-wide. He wrote many classic songs including the English lyrics to Claude FranΓ§ois and Jacques Revaux's music for Frank Sinatra's signature song, 'My Way' which has been recorded by many, including Elvis Presley. 1944 - American multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Chris Darrow was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, U.S.A. He was considered to be a pioneer of country rock music in the late-1960s and performed and recorded with numerous groups, including Kaleidoscope and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. 1946 - Jeffrey Hammond born in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. Former bass guitar player for the progressive rock band Jethro Tull. Hammond appeared on the classic Tull albums Aqualung (1971) and Thick as a Brick (1972) - https://youtu.be/N4zPu3ISCGs .
1949 - Hugh Nicholson born in Rutherglen, Scotland. From Scottish pop rock band Marmalade, (originally formed in 1961 as The Gaylords). They scored the 1969 UK No.1 single with their version of The Beatles song 'Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da' which peaked at No.42 in πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί - https://youtu.be/ax7J7HOP8II .
1954 - Slim Whitman, Billy Walker, Sugarfoot Collins, Sonny Harvelle, Tinker Fry, Curly Harris and a young Elvis Presley, all appeared at the Hillbilly Hoedown, Overton Park Shell, in Memphis Tennessee. Elvis was so nervous he stood up on the balls of his feet and shook his leg in time with the music, when he came offstage he asked why people were yelling at him. 1957 - Chris Miller (Rat Scabies) born. Drummer from English punk rock band The Damned, who had the 1983 UK No.3 single 'Eloise' (πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί No.6 ) - https://youtu.be/WO4DMK6Qd7M .
1958 - Kate Bush born in Bexleyheath, Kent, England. UK singer, songwriter, who had the 1978 UK No.1 & πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί No.2 single 'Wuthering Heights' (at the age of 19). Her 1985 UK No.1 album 'Hounds Of Love' spent 52 weeks on the chart. In 1987, she won a Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist, and in 2002 an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. 1966 - Jyoti Mishra of White Town, (1997 πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί & UK No.1 single 'Your Woman') born in Rourkela, India. White Town was originally the name of a band formed by Mishra in 1989, inspired by a Pixies concert he had attended - https://youtu.be/lVL-zZnD3VU .
1966 - The Beatles started a five-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'Yesterday...And Today', the group's 8th No.1 album. Issued only in the United States and Canada, the album is remembered primarily for the controversy surrounding its original cover image, the "butcher cover" featuring the band dressed in white smocks and covered with decapitated baby dolls and pieces of meat.
1966 - The Troggs started a two-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Wild Thing' (No.2 in πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί). Because of a distribution dispute, The Troggs' single was available on two competing labels: Atco and Fontana. 1968 - The Beatles' Apple Boutique, a psychedelic clothing store located at 94 Baker Street in London, closes after seven months of bad business practices and rampant theft. With the group and its intimates having had the pick of the remaining inventory the night before, Apple Boutique employees are instructed to simply let people in off the street to take whatever merchandise they like. The store was closed that evening for good.
1969 - The Beatles continued working on Abbey Road recording overdubs on 'Come Together', 'Polythene Pam/She Came In Through the Bathroom Window', 'You Never Give Me Your Money' and 'Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight'. The Beatles began to assemble the "medley" that would make upside two of the album. Paul McCartney told tape operator John Kurlander to discard 'Her Majesty', but Kurlander tacked it onto the end of the tape, about 20 seconds after the end of 'The End'. 1977 - The Bee Gees younger brother Andy Gibb started a four-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'I Just Wanna Be Your Everything', his first US No.1, with his next two singles, "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water" and "Shadow Dancing," also hitting the top U.S. spot, making him the first male solo artist with three straight #1 hits on the Hot 100. 1988 - Steve Winwood started a four-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Roll With It', a No.36 hit in πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί and a No.53 hit in the UK. 1991 - "Enter Sandman" is released as a single, serving as a preview of what's to come from Metallica's Black Album. 1993 - Don Myrick (saxophonist for Earth, Wind & Fire), age 53, is fatally shot by Santa Monica policemen during a narcotics investigation when the lighter he is holding is mistaken for a weapon.

2003 - Sam Phillips the founder of Sun Records and studio died of respiratory failure at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, age 80. In the 1940s, Phillips worked as a DJ for Muscle Shoals, Alabama radio station WLAY. Phillips recorded what some consider to be the first rock and roll record, 'Rocket 88' by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats in 1951. 2014 - American rock guitarist, and songwriter Dick Wagner, who worked with Alice Cooper and Lou Reed died from a lung infection aged 71. 2015 - American country music singer, Lynn Anderson, died aged 67. The multi-award-winning singer scored the 1971 πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί No.1 and the US & UK No.3 single 'Rose Garden', and charted 12 No.1, 18 Top 10, and more than 50 Top 40 hits.
