1940 - Chong (Thomas Chong - Cheech and Chong) born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

1941 - Bob Dylan (Robert Allan Zimmerman) born. His biggest hits are the 1965 US No.2 single 'Like A Rolling Stone', the 1969 UK No.5 single 'Lay Lady Lay', and his 1964 UK No.1 album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. He has won many awards throughout his career including the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature, and twelve Grammy Awards. 1963 - Elmore James, the hugely influential blues singer and slide guitarist died of a heart attack, aged 45. He was inducted into the Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Fame in 1991.

1970 - Singer / guitarist Peter Green, founder of Fleetwood Mac, left the group agig at the Bath Festival as he was apparently mentally tortured by the pressures of fame.

1971 - Bob Dylan visited the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem on his thirtieth birthday.

1974 - Duke Ellington (Jazz legend) died of lung cancer, aged 75.

1974 - NBC-TV's wildly successful variety show The Dean Martin Show signs off after nine years.

2010 - Slipknot bass player Paul Gray dies at age 38 from an accidental overdose in his Iowa hotel room.
