1939 - Coleman Hawkins recorded "Body and Soul."
1940 - Glenn Miller recorded "Make Believe Ballroom Time" in New York City.
1946 - Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates) is born Daryl Franklin Hohl in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Hall and Oates have sold an estimated 40 million records, making them the third-bestselling music duo of all time
1946 - Gary Mallaber (percussionist/backup singer for The Steve Miller Band) is born in Buffalo, New York.
1950 - Andrew Woolfolk (saxophonist/flautist for Earth, Wind & Fire) is born in Texas. The band has received 20 Grammy nominations and were the first African-American act to sell out Madison Square Garden.
1957 - Blair Cunningham, drums, Haircut 100 born. The band had four UK Top 10 hit singles between 1981 and 1982, including 'Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl)', 'Love Plus One' and 'Fantastic Day'.
1960 - Aretha Franklin plays a selection of standards at the Village Vanguard in New York City. It is Aretha's first non-gospel performance.
1962 - The Beatles made their first appearance on the UK singles chart with 'Love Me Do' which peaked at No. 4 on the chart.
1962 - Scott Johnson (rhythm guitarist/backing vocalist for Gin Blossoms) is born. Had the 1994 hit single 'Hey Jealousy', from their first major label album, New Miserable Experience (1992).
1965 - Gerry Marsden of Gerry and the Pacemakers marries his first wife, Pauline Behan -- the former secretary of his fan club!
1965 - The Beatles record "Run For Your Life" and "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)."
1968 - Aretha Franklin's "I Say a Little Prayer" is certified gold.
1969 - Muddy Waters is severely injured in a car crash just outside Chicago that leaves three other passengers dead. Waters will remain absent from music for about a year and will rarely stand up on stage again.
1970 - Elvis Presley is made an honorary "special" deputy sheriff of Bel Air, California.
1973 - The divorce between Elvis and Priscilla Presley is finalized. The two remain close friends and walk out of the Santa Monica courthouse arm in arm.
1974 - John Denver was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Annie's Song.' The song was a tribute to his wife and was written in 10 minutes while he was on a ski lift.
1975 - Neil Sedaka's "Bad Blood," with backup by Elton John, hits #1 for the first of three weeks.
1975 - "Saturday Night Live" was broadcast for the first time with George Carlin as the guest host. Janis Ian performed "At Seventeen" and "In the Winter." Billy Preston played "Nothing from Nothing" and "Fancy Lady."
1976 - Pussycat started a four-week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Mississippi' making them the first Dutch act to top the UK chart.
1980 - The Police scored their second No.1 album with their third studio release 'Zenyatta Mondatta', which featured, 'Don't Stand So Close to Me', 'Canary in a Coalmine and 'De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da.'
1981 - Opening a show for The Rolling Stones at Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, Prince gets booed off the stage. The Stones have good intentions in bringing in a rising star, but his act isn't a good fit for this crowd, and when he opens his trench coat to reveal bikini briefs, it gets ugly. Prince never again performs as an opening act.
1986 - "When I Think of You" by Janet Jackson goes to #1 on the Hot 100, making her and Michael the first siblings to land #1 solo singles on the chart. The song is also the first #1 produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who reach the summit 15 more times.
1990 - Drummer Dave Grohl played his first gig with Nirvana when they appeared at the North Shore Surf Club in Olympia.
1991 - Apple Computers reaches an agreement with The Beatles' Apple Corps, paying $26.5 million for the rights to run music software - an update to their 1981 deal that prohibited the computer maker from selling anything music-related. The deal is revised from time to time as Apple Computer makes music a major part of their business.
1997 - On the UK albums chart, it's battling Britpop as The Verve's Urban Hymns knocks Oasis' Be Here Now out of #1.
1997 - Elton John went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Candle In The Wind 97' A re-write of his 1974 hit about Marilyn Monroe. This version was raising funds for the Diana, Princess of Wales charity, following her death in Paris. It went on to become the biggest selling single in the world ever.
1999 - Debbie Rowe, Michael Jackson's second wife, files for divorce and grants Jackson full custody of their two children, Prince and Paris.
2010 - George Michael was released from Highpoint Prison in Suffolk, England after serving four weeks of an eight-week sentence for driving under the influence of drugs. The singer had been arrested after crashing his car into the front of a Snappy Snaps store in Hampstead, North London in July of this year.
2011 - George "Mojo" Buford (harmonica player for Muddy Waters’ band) dies after a long illness in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at age 81.
2013 - Lady Gaga makes her movie debut playing shape-shifting assassin La Camaleon in the Robert Rodriguez action-crime flick Machete Kills.
2016 - Rod Stewart is knighted at Buckingham Palace, becoming Sir Roderick David Stewart.
2018 - The Music Modernization Act is passed into law, clarifying how artists, songwriters and producers are compensated for music played on streaming services, online radio, and satellite radio. It also grants royalties for songs written before 1972.
