1969 - The Beatles shoot the photo for their Abbey Road album cover at the crosswalk outside Abbey Road studios, where they are recording. The "Paul is dead" rumours have been floating around since the group stopped touring in 1966 - it was whispered that he had been replaced by a lookalike. On the cover, McCartney is smoking a cigarette and is barefoot. In the conspiracy theory, he represents a corpse in a funeral procession, with Lennon (in a white suit) the priest, Ringo (in black) the pallbearer, and Harrison (in casual clothes) the gravedigger. Then there's the Volkswagen Beetle parked askew on the side of the street. The license plate reads "28IF," as in McCartney would be 28 years old if he were still alive. It was McCartney who came up with the concept for the cover. The album is released about six weeks later as The Beatles are tying up loose ends before they part ways for good (the Let It Be album, which was recorded before Abbey Road, is released in 1970, after their split).

1947 - 🇦🇺 - Born Gary Stephen Anderson, Angry Anderson was born on the 5th of August 1947 in Melbourne, Vic. From 1971 to 1973, Anderson led the rock group Peace Power and Purity and came to wider public notice as the lead vocalist with Buster Brown. He fronted the hard rock and blues rock band from its foundation in 1973, the original line-up included Phil Rudd on drums, who left in 1974 to join AC/DC. In 1975, Buster Brown released an album, Something to Say, on Mushroom Records/Festival Records before disbanding in November that year. Formed in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, in 1978, the band were originally known as Art Nouveau, a four-piece avant-garde group, with Nick Beggs on bass guitar, Steve Askew on lead guitar, Stuart Croxford Neale on keyboards, Jez Strode on drums. 1975 - The first all-female hard-rock band is formed when producer Kim Fowley puts together The Runaways, featuring Joan Jett, future Bangle Michael Steele, and Lita Ford. The Runaways are initially a trio, later joined by vocalist Cherie Curry - subject of their song "Cherry Bomb" - and lead guitarist Lita Ford. Steele is fired and replaced by Jackie Fox. 1976 - At a show in Birmingham, England, an inebriated Eric Clapton speaks out in favour of the right-wing National Front, repeating their slogan, "Keep Britain white," and adding, "I used to be into dope, now I'm into racism." Clarifying his statements years later, Clapton says, "I made some fairly racial comments, but they weren't directed at any particular minority. It was a feeling of loss of identity and losing my Englishness."
1978 - "Substitute," a cover of a Righteous Brothers song recorded by an all-girl South African group called Clout, becomes a surprise hit, reaching #2 in the UK and No.3 in 🇦🇺. 1999 - Music written by Johann Sebastian Bach was found in the Ukraine. The music was thought to have been destroyed over 50 years ago during World War II. The material was found in the musical estate of Carl Phillipp Emanuel Bach, who was one of J.S. Bach's children.

2008 - 🇦🇺 - Australian Country and Western legend, Reg Lindsay OAM was born on the 7th of July 1929 and died of pneumonia on the 5th of August 2008 aged 79. He won three Golden Guitar Awards and wrote more than 500 songs in his 50-year music career. Lindsay recorded over 65 albums and 250 singles. Reg made his first trip to Nashville in 1968 and recorded his first Nashville EP on this historic trip. His most popular cross-over hit was a cover version, "Armstrong" (March 1971), which reached No. 6 on the AU Go-Set National Top 60. 2009 - Steven Tyler of Aerosmith falls off the stage at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, suffering injuries to his head and neck, which force the rest of the band's tour to be cancelled. Tyler falls when he is entertaining the crowd with a dance while a technical problem is being sorted.
2021 - 🇦🇺 - Brian Henderson (born 15 September 1931 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand) passes. Notwithstanding his presence as the premier news anchor for over 35-years on Channel TCN-9 in Sydney, Brian Henderson was also the face of TV's iconic Australian Rock & Roll's representation to us as family entertainment, Bandstand. It first went to air in November 1958, three months ahead of Six O'Clock Rock's debut. Whilst Henderson couldn't sing, dance or play an instrument, he became a significant intermediary between the television viewing public and the world of pop music. It ended in 1972, having survived 14-years without scandal or eruptions of temperament, however, escalating budget costs became too high, and the show was axed.
